Like many young fans of Frozen, Bunny became completely obsessed with Elsa. She would watch the movie on loop daily if allowed, sing the songs constantly, and engage in pretend play as Elsa for hours on end. This inspired me to create a custom Elsa costume for her.
Since Bunny was still very small at the time, I aimed for a simple design. The dress body is made from inexpensive satin and features shirring with elastic thread. While true to the story would have required shirring down to the waistline, I opted for an empire waist for a cuter look. The cape is blue netting or tulle with spots, attached to the dress top before adding the sparkly arms. It’s gathered along one line of shirring. The sparkly arms are crafted from white and silver sparkly spandex using a basic t-shirt pattern, and I didn’t hem the neckline or sleeves. The costume was quick to make, and Bunny was absolutely thrilled. She enjoyed backyard “Let It Go” concerts all winter, often without shoes, as is common in Australia. I later added a slit in the side seam after learning from Bunny that it’s essential for Elsa’s aesthetic—it’s adorable what details kids notice. I’m very pleased with the outcome, and Bunny uses the costume frequently. Weeks later, she wore it to a Disney princess-themed birthday party, which made her year. A photo of the dress alone is on Instagram. As a fun extra, I photoshopped Bunny into a Frozen poster, though it took a long time and I got tired, so the remaining photos in our backyard are unedited. I love how much she enjoys her costumes!
