This Madeline costume is one of my absolute favorites for Book Week! It was a perfect choice for Bunny, as we adore the character and knew it would make a wonderful costume.
Similar to my approaches with Rainbow Dash and Ariel, I designed this costume in separate, reusable pieces. The outfit consists of three main components: a Dress, a Capelet, and a Hat. For colder weather, Bunny wore a long-sleeved shirt underneath, along with socks and black shoes. The dress is quite simple—it’s based on half a t-shirt pattern with an attached skirt. I added a pleat simply because I love pleats! The capelet was made from a circle of fabric with a Peter Pan collar and a red bow. I believe the capelet is essential to capturing Madeline’s look. If you’re considering a similar project, you could focus on just the capelet and pair it with a hat, a navy top, and a navy skirt or dress. What I love most is that these pieces aren’t overly complicated but instantly evoke Madeline. I’m especially thrilled that the dress is adorable on its own, giving it value beyond just being a costume. That makes me incredibly happy! The best part, as always, was seeing how much Bunny adored wearing this costume. That truly makes all the effort worthwhile!
