I go through a lot of fabric and have a huge pile of scraps. In the pursuit of less waste, I’ve been trying to get into the habit of turning scraps into fabric scrap “yarn”. I use it for my scrubby kitchen cloths and mostly for making storage baskets. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen some, but I don’t think I’ve blogged about them yet.
Here’s how I do it! First, you need to cut your fabric into strips. Here, I am using my serger cut-offs. They are roughly 1/2″ wide and are really great for knitting scrubby cloths. Start with two pieces and cut a slit into each end. Thread one of the strips through the slit in the other. Always thread the longest or main strip through the strip you are adding on. It may not seem like a big deal at the beginning, but later on when you’ve added a lot of pieces and your yarn is getting long, this order will make your life easier. Now, take the remaining end of the strip you are adding on and thread it through the slit on the main piece that you just threaded through. I know this may sound confusing, but try it. Once you’ve tried it, it makes more sense. Here is what the join looks like once you’ve pulled the end of the added-on strip through the slit. Pull tight! Now, wrap up your ball and save it for using in your next crafty project!
