Briar Dress Sewing Guide and Fabric Tips

I was determined to create a Briar dress, an idea I’ve been obsessed with since planning this sewalong. I still have two more versions in mind: a maxi and a surprise design. However, I’ll likely pause those for a few weeks to avoid extending the sewalong indefinitely with all the variations I want to cover.

Selecting the right fabric was crucial; I chose a Ponte/Ponti knit for added structure to prevent it from being too clingy. The Sprite Ponte from Tessuti fabrics worked perfectly, and I highly recommend them for their fantastic customer service.

I made a small mistake by cutting the front too short, but following the original tutorial length (before I trimmed more) would be ideal. In black, navy, or a subdued color, this dress is great for office wear. While my version isn’t ideal for everyday use at this length, it makes a stunning date night outfit.

You’ll be amazed at how simple this process is. Start by drawing cut lines on the front pattern piece at the widest part to ensure enough room, such as right above the centre front hem. Then, align the front piece with the back to mark and continue the slash line, keeping both lines perpendicular to the centrefold.

Cut along the lines and spread the pieces by your desired amount (I used 9 inches, which was perfect before I shortened it further). Insert pattern paper into the gaps and tape it down. Use a hip curve ruler to blend the seamlines, resulting in pattern pieces that look like this.
