Creative DIY Home Decor Ideas

Many friends have shown interest in the decoration of my new home, asking where I purchased the wall hangings. However, many of the items are DIY projects that I’ve created myself. Today, I’d like to share some of my ideas for DIY soft decorations. As many of you have noticed, the items hanging on my walls are not just decorative paintings; they include both flat and three-dimensional pieces. Upon closer inspection, one can appreciate the strong sense of depth and detail.

My friends have described it as resembling a museum, an antique shop, or a magical fantasy house. For instance, on this particular wall, there are not only paintings but also mirrors, small cabinets, and wall clocks. The small cabinet is actually a dollhouse furniture piece, which is akin to a miniature furniture model. The golden sun and moon decoration next to it is a regular brooch. Both of these items are not very heavy and can be secured to the wall using ‘picture hanging adhesive.

‘ Of course, for the small cabinet, it’s better to use several adhesive strips for a more secure hold. And that black ceramic wall clock, doesn’t it look quite vintage? But in reality, it was originally just a common and inexpensive tabletop clock. I attached a hanging hook and a tassel to the back with no-nail adhesive, and it transformed into a small wall clock. I feel that it looks much more sophisticated when hung on the wall compared to when it’s placed on a table.

Below, I’ve included the DIY method, which is genuinely very simple. Wall clock + no-nail adhesive hook + tassel pendant = vintage wall clock.
I also enjoy hanging plates on the wall. Nowadays, the decorative paintings available in the home decoration market are mostly mass-produced, and after seeing so many, one might feel that the framed walls in many homes look quite similar. However, there are various plates with different glazes, techniques, colors, and patterns, and there are truly many beautiful options! Especially with the increasing popularity of Chinese-style designs, the patterns on many dinner plates, sushi plates, and dim sum plates are truly exquisite! Moreover, plates are much cheaper than decorative paintings.

How to hang plates on the wall? Simply use no-nail adhesive and attach a hanging hook to the back, and they can be hung anywhere like paintings: no-nail adhesive can stick to many things, such as small decorations around these switches/outlet panels. I mentioned earlier that Chinese-style designs have been very popular in recent years, but in fact, Chinese and Eastern elements have always been very popular in the home decoration industry.

It’s just that the decorative paintings on the mass market are all very similar, or they are particularly expensive. But many Chinese-style and Eastern element items can be easily and simply DIYed to become very beautiful soft decorations. For example, combining a vintage folding fan with a picture frame makes a great three-dimensional decorative painting, and the fan can be taken down and used at any time.

I also ordered a few picture frames and bought some favorite brocade fabrics to replace the picture core, and after DIYing them, they become very unique decorative paintings.
Brocade fabrics have a texture, eliminating the need for glass and avoiding reflections, which makes them feel more substantial than real paintings when displayed at home. Many friends have asked me to share a tutorial, but it’s actually quite straightforward: simply use fabric instead of the painting core.

You might need double-sided adhesive to secure the fabric and prevent it from slipping.

After moving to my new home, I purchased a large full-length mirror for outfit photos, but its backside was quite unattractive! To improve its appearance, I bought a roll of wall fabric and applied it to the back with rice glue. I also adorned the frame with PU decorative trim and velvet ribbons, giving it a vintage screen-like appearance. This could be considered a form of spiritual compensation for not using wall fabric during my home renovation.

Now, this full-length mirror serves a dual purpose: one side is a mirror, and the other side is a vintage wall fabric. It can also be moved around as a room divider, which works quite well.
