Marla Mock, president of Molly Maid USA, and Alicia Sokolowski, president and co-CEO at AspenClean, share their expert advice.

The Pantry

Mock suggests starting your cleaning schedule three weeks before the holiday by purging your food cabinets. It’s not just about food either; bring out any special holiday dishes and give them a thorough cleaning, especially if they’ve been in storage.

The Fridge

Continuing with the food theme, don’t overlook cleaning out your fridge before the holidays. Sokolowski advises deep cleaning and organizing your fridge to make space for festive dishes and keep them fresh. Remove expired items, wipe down the interior with a washcloth and all-purpose cleaner, and address any stubborn stains.

The Oven

About two weeks before Christmas, Mock recommends an oven clean. This often-overlooked chore ensures a sparkling clean oven and a home free of burnt smells on Christmas morning. To clean, remove the oven racks for scrubbing, and don’t forget the stovetop, oven interior, and the oven door.

The Guest Bathroom

Any bathrooms that guests will use must be deep cleaned before the holiday season. While the primary bathroom can wait, take time to clean the hallway half-bath thoroughly. Clean sinks, toilets, showers, wipe down cabinet fronts, dust behind toilets, and mop the floors. For a finishing touch, add a seasonal sachet or holiday candle, and Sokolowski suggests restocking toiletries to avoid running out of essentials.

The Guest Bedroom

If you are expecting overnight guests, take a few hours to spruce up that seldom-used guest bedroom. Remove the existing bedding, wash it and replace it with clean sheets, pillows and blankets. Remove anything from the room that doesn’t belong, such as sports equipment or home office supplies. ‘Don’t forget to vacuum under the bed as well,’ says Sokolowski. The Living Room

The living room is where many holiday celebrations take place. Ensure it’s sparkling before the festive season begins. Sokolowski suggests starting by dusting all surfaces. Then, clean any windows and don’t forget to vacuum and re-fluff the sofa. Have gift wrap storage solutions ready. ‘If you have a carpet in the living room, consider shampooing your carpet or getting it professionally cleaned,’ adds Sokolowski.

The Countertops and Surfaces

Just before the holiday, Mock recommends clearing clutter from your kitchen counters and surfaces in the rest of your home. But this is not the time to declutter the garage. Save that cleaning for the New Year! Instead, focus on tidying up spaces where guests will be rather than rarely touched storage spaces.
