Today, we will sew the Darling Ranges dress skirt with inseam pockets for View A, though this pocket method also applies to View C. I adore pockets and believe the key to neat results is following a specific order to finish all raw edges properly. I’ll focus on that process here. Note, you can easily omit pockets if preferred to save sewing time.
First, neaten the pocket raw edges initially to avoid mess later. Use a serger/overlocker, zig-zag stitch, pinking shears, or bias tape binding for this. Next, align pockets on skirt pieces by laying all skirt pieces right-side up with side seams aligned. Place pockets on side seams right-side down, matching top edges to pattern notches, then pin and sew 1/2″ from the edge. After that, neaten the side seam raw edges before assembling the skirt, using methods like serging, zig-zag stitch, pinking shears, or binding. Then, press pockets open with right sides out and understitch for neatness and to prevent showing on the dress exterior. Finally, lay the back skirt piece right-side up with pockets out, place front pieces right-side down, match side seams and pockets, pin, sew side seams to the pocket, continue 5/8″ beyond the pocket edge, sew around the pocket curve, and return down the side seams. Press seams and pockets toward the skirt’s center front. This may be slightly controversial, but in this case, I like to press my seams forwards rather than open, as that would require snipping the seams at the pockets, and I just hate raw exposed cuts! But it’s up to you 🙂
